Giving Up

Probably 99% if the people who read this blog know that I'm LDS. I love my religion and am grateful for the peace it has brought to me during my life, but I LOVE other religions and religious practices. Hanukkah is such a beautiful holiday. My sister actually celebrates this holiday with her family by lighting a menorah and giving presents. I would have to say my personal non-LDS practice would be the Catholic Lent. You can read about it HERE.

Ever since I was about 15 years old I've been giving up something for Lent. I've done everything from sugar to cussing. My sisters can get pretty creative, giving up elevators and gluttony for example. I always thought it was such great timing...coming right after New Year's resolutions had bit the dust, it is a time of renewal. I time to start over and really get it right this time...can anyone say Atonement?

So, what'll it be this year? I'm still thinking of mine, but would love to hear if any of you would like to join in. Come on. Just give up for once and don't even feel guilty about it.

I love Lent, too. I've given up lots of things in the past. I haven't really thought about it this year, but maybe I'll work it into my diet for the Gestational Diabetes I'm sure that I'll find out I have on Saturday. No soda, no sweets, no white flour. It will make it easier if I know I'm doing it for religious purposes instead of because my doctor tells me too. Thanks for reminding me...

How about chocolate? I know everyone loves it but I hate what it does to my waistline. I am going to give up chocolate, ya right!

Let's see--I would be willing to give up cleaning up after the dogs, doing the laundry, vacuuming, getting up to get the kids off to school each day....the list goes on and on.

I admire you! I can't imagine having the discipline to give something up...I mean I could give up white flour, but I'm not allowed to have that anyway. Gestational Diabetes and all. Although...*looks around* I had a girl scout cookie today...it was the Samoas...I couldn't help it.
Okay, FINE, I had 3.
At least I'm on insulin now.

How about "it?"

Just a suggestion.

I love the idea of Lent. I say "the idea of" because, since I've never tried it, I don't think I can say "I love Lent." It's like a super long fast Sunday! Maybe give up sleeping in? (This would kill me.) I debated giving up internet time, like keeping myself to only a certain amount of time a day.

I wish I could give up the sauce (by sauce I mean my caffeinated cola beverages) but I know I can't. It's just to yummy.

Rick wants to give "it" up for lent? Or is he wanting you to "give it up"? :)

Hmm, I can give up chocolate. I'd say Dew or white flour but that would just get ugly.

I give up housework. And yard work. And work work.

Heck, just put me down for "work" in general.

Who says you have to give up only the good stuff?

Sadly, I think my body has decided to give up sleep all on its own.

Sigh.

When does Lent start and how long do you have to give up something?

Fine, I'll give up my Beer and Cigarettes, but only for Lent!

Can I give up giving up alcohol? I could really use a drink right about now...
