It's Car Buying Time!

Ok, so Rick and I are getting ready to buy a new to us car and we're pretty dang excited. We've had one car for about six months now and although it is doable, I'm not the best planner and I think Rick is going to kill me if I call him one more time at work and beg him to pick up some milk during his lunch. Love you milk boy!

So, I need help. We're looking for a bigger than a 4/5 passenger car. NO, WE'RE NOT PREGNANT, we just want some more room and the option to have more than just our kids in the car if we so choose to. Any suggestions?

I believe Honda and Toyota are the only way to go if you can afford it. They last, are durable, and hold their value. And most of them have gone down in price due to our recession. Good luck, car buying can be so fun!

I agree with Marissa. I have a Dodge Caravan, and it's only ok.

you know that I think you should get a Honda Pilot. than I think both you and Rick will be Happy. My best Friend Heidi has one and she bought it because she could fit her Harp in the Back of it and also fit her 4 kids in it comfortably!!!

I have a Chrysler Pacifica and have been very pleased with it.

How 'bout this?

We'll only need to come up with another $40k. Or find a stolen ... I mean... well-used one...

4-5 passenger? Our corolla fits five and it's fabulous. If you're looking for a bit more space, you might try out the new 7 seat Rav 4 by Toyota. It's way less expensive than other cars its size, has 4 wheel drive (I guess that's the main reason I was looking at it - you probably don't need that so much in AZ) and is more fuel efficient than its buddies.

I'll buy an american car when they can make em like that :-)

Oh I see, BIGGER THAN. Got ya. Yeah try the rav 4 with the 3rd row. At the moment, if I had money for an upgrade, that's definitely what we'd get.

My sister has a Pilot and it fits her little skinny boys, but give them 5 yrs and that back row will be too small. Plus she can't fit more than a stroller (my old graco) and it is a hold and slam fit.

I LOVE my odyssey! I can fit my double, plus all the crap I'd need for a week vacation (w/4 kids) and car trip in it. It gets great milage, it's resale is higher than we owe. jamencon :).

I want to see you in either a big SUV or a minivan, because I think you as a road raging big vehicle mom would be AWESOME to see. Pedestrian crossing at a red hand? Oh no you di-nt!

I would go for a Mazda CX7. We have a Mazda 3 right now and love it. When we get a new car, it will be another Mazda. It has held it's value amazingly well. We even have the dealership calling us every so often asking us if we want to sell it back to them. No thanks. We love it too much.

We love the Hyundai Santa Fe... it drives like a car but is a small SUV. Ours is a 5 seater, but they now come in 7 seaters... the back two seats fold down so you can haul people or stuff... we will probably buy another one eventually. They also have the 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty. We have only had to replace brake pads and do oil changes in the 5 years or so we have had it! Good luck. :)

We have a Buick Rendezvous and love it. However, if you want to have more kids, I would suggest a mini van. Our three rows are great for our family of four now, but in a few months... I wouldn't even consider a mini van and now that our little surprise is coming, I am going to have to be very creative since I won't be able to fit a stroller in the back with the third row up. I love that it is cooler than the mini van, but I wish I got a Caravan or a Town and Country Mini van... If I've learned one thing about living in Detoit this year it is buy American, they really are good cars and you just might save someone's job! If you just can't convince yourself to go for the mini van, try a Pacifica because the third row splits. I just heard slippery and wet from the other room. Maybe I should check into that?

Oh, yeah, if you will ever get the van, do it now. We looked into trading ours in and found out that the blue book value went down so much in one month that we would owe $4k after getting full blue book price. Make a good decision for your family now. Or, buy a mini van and we can meet each other in Kansas and switch cars!

Third and final comment: Based on the green watery mess that I just discovered all over the living room carpet of the house I'm RENTING: get the smaller car and just don't have any more kids.

I know you should buy american, but I have NOT been pleased with the maintenance on my dodge caravan.I bought it for the built in car seats (I highly recommend built in car seats since your kids will be in car seats until they are in college! Heck, I think I am supposed to be in a car seat!).I finally stopped fixing all the issues unless they are major, so I now have a minivan with a non working back wiper and front wiper, the ac drips in the car and makes it smell like a wet dog (after it was repaired twice) the heat has one setting, HIGH, so even on 30 degree days the kids are burning up, the windows roll down intermintely, and the air bag light is ALWAYS on..It makes funny noises and every time I take it in, the bill always exceeds the value of the stupid car...The best cars we have owned have been fords..with 5 kids I have always owned the SUV's, but they have been VERY good to us...only requiring regular maintenance..love them! to cut this short...don't buy a dodge....anything but a dodge...

So, you know my take already...Toyota Sienna...with power doors. I WOULD recommend getting a warranty if said used car has lots of bells and whistles. We've already had to use our warranty. Just for stupid stuff, like the seat warmers. But, hey...if it's got 'em and the warranty will pay for it...fix 'em.

We love our Kia minivan. I know a minivan, But I wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe a BMW). We have had it for over 5 years and bought it used (one years old) and haven't had any problems with it. And, they don't cost as must as Honda or Toyota. And, they have the best crash rating in it's class :)!
Hope that helps-let us know what you buy.

Your comment on my blog? HILARIOUS. I laughed out loud - thank you.

MB, I LOVE my Chrysler Town and Country. I was one of those "never go do the mini van" people, but I love it and will not buy anything diffferent. If I didn't need a van I would look at the Pacifica. Or my brother has a Mazda Tribute that is great.
